That turn of foot
In believably we backed Sir Ivor at 100/1 in the Derby!
A very good horse as long as he got good ground. He was electric in the 2000 guinees and the derby he won was run to suit him as he was not a true stayer. This record bears out in defeat in the Irish derby in a true run race (with Piggott on the winner Ribero) and again in the Prix de l'arc against Vaguelly Noble. He was definately best at a mile to a mile and a quarter on good ground.
Very unlike the great Vincent O'Brien to run Sir Ivor just a week after his defeat (at 1/3) in the Irish Derby
His grandson Zabeel sire'd Vengeance of Rain..
The Eclipse is run at Sandown... A stiff course with long straight rising all the way to the line... Sir Ivor was a speed horse and probably did not get the trip on this track Pigott got off him once and said it was the fastest he had ever ridden and was right....Much is made of the Green Desert line and the dominant gene his progeny possess to come with a late burst of speed on a quick surface.......Sir Ivor was Green Deserts dam sire. ....The dominant gene the line has starts from Sir Ivor....not Green Desert.
Nicely ridden, never too far away from the leaders.
Great horse , great ride from Lester and brilliant commentary ( Is Lester worried if he`s not he's the only Sir Ivor supporter who's not) classic
Interviewer: when did you know you were going to win with Sir Ivor ? Lester : when he was born ! Unbelievable racehorse .
Timed to perfection. Lester really was a genius.
The US horses and jockeys were completely outclassed by Lester Piggott and Sir Ivor's brilliance.
Sir Ivor was American bred, wasn't he, racing in Europe for the most part, a few races in the US, before standing stud first in Ireland, and then at Claiborne Farms until his passing in 1995. Thirty years old is quite old for a horse.
What a horse 🐴 what a jockey . Awesome partnership I remember that year so well .
Lester coolness personified. Sir Ivor could have won by ten lengths.
Dr Fager beat Fort Macey (a very good horse) carrying 16 lbs more in weight. It was hard work on a surface he didn't like. But puts this race in perspective. Sir Ivor is no Dr Fager.
Carmarthen (the chestnut horse with the noseband) lost ground at the start , loosing at least three and more lengths, otherwise he would have finished close to Sir Ivor and ahead of Fort Marcy and Ksar Alexander with a normal race. He previously finished third to Vaguely Noble and Sir Ivor in the Arc (same year)
Wow!!
Peter o Sunland was the comantietor for the BBC
I think that horse is a hunter, not a flat racehorse
A truly great horse and the total legend in the saddle. Brilliant combo, horses like Sir Ivor are only meant to appeal once in a lifetime, yet i was privileged enough to see not only Secretariat but the ultimate master Sea Bird. There will never be another Sea Bird. Sir Ivor has to rate as the second best i have ever seen, makes Frankel who others rave about look ordinary. Bizarrely Frankel wouldn’t make my top 10. Really great to see him again taking it to the Americans
One of the greatest Derby winners of all time- not sure he was as good as Sea Bird ( i saw both) or the overlooked Morston but a really great race horse. The 60’s were golden years for quality horses
Pure class was Sir Ivor- I remember him well
😂❤😊
Mark please send bird for life to Pontefract this year . Plz they always do big 2 mile races
What I am about to tell you is 100% true, I still find it unbelievable when I think about it. I rarely bet on the Horse's however I am glad I did so in this race. The only reason I actually did was because the day before my Dog had died and 3 days before that, my brother's Dog also had passed away. So I thought I'd check the race cards incase there was any horse's running that had the same name as the 2 Dogs. I nearly fell off my seat when I saw a runner called "Sid's Annie". Why is that so strange you may ask??? Well my brother's Dog was named Sid and my Dog was named Annie. It was so unbelievable to see a horse called "Sid's Annie" and with it being in the same week that we sadly had lost both of our Dogs too. So unsurprisingly I was convinced that it must be a sign from above, especially after winning the race too.
A great jockey and great horse
Sir Ivor and Lester poetry in motion , they were made for each other , the stars collided .
Absolutely killer burst of speed from Sir Ivor. I'm not convinced that the great Lester didn't make this harder than it needed to be.
Unlucky! Well ridden
Sir Ivor was bred by Alice Headley Bell at her Mill Ridge Farm in Lexington, Kentucky.
Sandy Barclay GRH Left Devastated Boy Wonder Shattered Racing Is For Sure A TOUGH Old Game.Lester/Lethal
Probably one of the great timed runs of all time
I was there also, my mate and I had £5 on Sir Ivor, we got 6/4, as there was some doubt about him staying. We were on somebody’s car bonnet by the winning post. I remember that Sandy Barclay and that great big tank of a horse Connaught, set sail for home and it seemed all over. Suddenly we saw Lester flick his elbows out, and Sir Ivor took off. It’s the fastest finishing winner of the Derby I have ever seen! Getting Sir Ivor to stay the Derby distance was a masterpiece ride by Lester!
He went back the next year and won it again. When asked by the American press Lester at what stage of the race did you think you were going to win. He replied last year.
Brilliant reply by the great man.
😂
Wow - first time I've seen Sir Ivor, almost can't believe the way he won.
Then he had Sir Tristram. Who had Zabeel etc
What a day of sport! United won The European Cup at Wembley a few hours later.
Fantastic ride on Q20 and so pleased for her to have come through her ordeal.
Lester and Mike Smith. Mike passed all others in flat
Bayston Mill ))
I remember Sir Ivor well….good sire. I also remember Fort Marcy, who was in this race. I miss those days.
I saw Fort Marcy race at Hollywood Park in the early 70's. Cougar II and Drumtop were also in the race. I kept the program for decades but threw all my old programs away one day years ago.
This is the year that I was born... thanks for this video sir I appreciate it
Been reading how Lester regarded Sir Ivor and wow that was impressive. RIP Lester
P.S. That burst of acceleration reminded me of Dancing Brave's later famous demonstration of speed in Europe under another top jockey, Pat Eddery.
Exactly
Success can live with criticism. And a genius in the saddle can afford to smile from his lofty perch of perfection!
i'm srilanka uk horse racing live tv name ?
Lester Piggott had a clock in his head he knew where to be when to be how to be and wby to be in the end he was the first past the post the greatest jockey ever to saddle a racehorse rivaled only by Willie Shoemaker Lester has so many great rides that just sticks in peoples memory but one that has me mesmerized is in 1981 a sprint race with Piggott aboard the favourite Maryland's Cookie as the field swung for home Piggott was last widest of all yet just before the winning post he swooped down like an Eagle and the rest is history Piggot won I was totally mesmerized
I’ll never forget Sir Ivor. I visited him at Claiborne. He stole my pinky ring! When I told his handler. He calmly went up to him put his hand out and told him to spit it out. Which he did! I met him and Round Table, Nijinsky, Riva Ridge and a big red horse named Secretariat. A day I will never forget
What a great memory
Lester's fav horse💯😎
I’ve never seen this race, remember it being announced on TV and reading it in the newspaper, so thank you for sharing this. Superstar of a horse.
He really was some horse❤️
Royal Palace was one of the most under-rated horses of all time... very sad he always seems forgotten in the year of Sir Ivor and Vaguely Noble..
Exactly, and Lester still rates Sir Ivor the best he ever rode, saying he faced better opposition than Nijnsky. I his final race, Royal Palace demolished the field in the KG&QE at Ascot, despite breaking down in the final half-furlong.
Royal Palace was a great horse but as often happens he had to be around in the same time as Sir Ivor. The most overlooked horse was to come a little later as once raced Morston took the Derby.
